Learning the craft

In January 2022, I began taking private lessons with Susan Hulme, one of only 20 graduates of the American Academy of Bookbinding (Est. 1993). I studied book arts in college, but I was ready to learn the craft of bookbinding at its highest level.

While bookbinding uses many of my skills honed as a designer, it is also a magnificently new & rote experience for me. Specifically, I am learning laced-in binding techniques & leather design binding techniques.

Bookbinding for the future

Traditionally, everything is done by hand, but I have been experimenting with integrating new technologies such as a laser cutter into my practice. I am also interested in experimenting with lab-created & non-traditional materials in my bindings.

I am creating a fine binding collection of contemporary books on the topics of nature, technology, art, & design.
